BookTrust recycled PET tote

- Life cycle analysis
- RPET from reclaimed plastic
- DUPRO and FRI inspected
The brief
BookTrust is the UK's largest children's reading charity, dedicated to getting children reading. One of their main routes is a curated selection of books given to new parents in the Yellow Baby Bag. The bag was originally canvas. BookTrust asked us to look at its environmental impact and see whether it could be improved.
Material choice
Working through our supplier network we identified recycled PET as a good fit. RPET is made from reclaimed plastic such as drinks bottles, and carries a favourable environmental footprint. The reclaimed plastic is formed into threads and woven into a flexible fabric. Fit for purpose physically. We compared the environmental impact of both designs and materials rather than assuming.

Research
With external partners we carried out a life cycle analysis to quantify overall environmental impact across CO2, land, water and energy usage, covering material production, manufacture, transportation, use and disposal. Cotton showed significantly higher land, water and energy usage than the RPET option.

Production and fulfilment
With the reduction evidenced, the client approved design and production. From artwork onwards we handled quality control through sample checking and DUPRO and FRI inspections, safety, compliance, ethical requirements and delivery into the UK.
